The Scenting Language of Dogs: Seminar with Amy Herot, Petaluma, CA – March 9, 2024

Sunday March 10, 2024:  Leash Handling for Competition

Check in opens at 8:00 a.m. each day, Seminar is 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

There will also be a working day on Monday, March 11, 2024 with priority entry to seminar attendees who attend both days. Auditing is available. Once you have registered for the seminars, a link to the working day registration will be sent to you.

NOTE: Registration for the working day DOES NOT MEAN YOU ARE CONFIRMED for a working spot. We will be contacting all applicants for payment and with confirmation once the seminar registrations are completed.

WHAT TO BRING:

• Chairs will be available at the facility, or you may opt to bring your own chair
• Wear weather-appropriate clothes and shoes, as we may be working outside.
• Note taking supplies. There will be handouts and exercises to write down.

DOG POLICIES: These are non-working seminars. Unless you have been selected to work as a demo dog, please leave your dogs at home, or in appropriate vehicles if you must bring your dog. There is no shade on the grounds and no interior space for crating.

FOOD: We will provide beverages and snacks. Lunch break will be approximately one hour. Please bring your own food. There are food places available, but they are about 10-15 minutes away.

VIDEO AND AUDIO-TAPING: Please sign the photography/video release form below. Audio and/or videotaping is not permitted in general, however, working participants only may have someone videotape only their own dog if they wish. The rule is that only ONE other video camera that is not one of the presenters can be taping and  only if requested by the current person running their dog.

PARKING: You will need to park in the gravel parking lot. Parking will be tight. Please be courteous. Dogs will need to be safely secured in their vehicles. We will not have space to crate dogs indoors.

Cancellation Policy

All cancellations must be in writing, via email sent to [email protected], and will be confirmed by return email. Your cancellation will not be valid without a written confirmation of receipt from Jennie Keifer.

•   Full refund up to February 14, 2024 minus $25.00 administrative fee

•   50% refund up to February 23, 2024.

•   25% refund of seminar fee up to March 4, 2024.

•   No refunds for cancellations after March 4, 2024.

•   No refund for no-shows.

The Scenting Language of Dogs – Saturday, March 9, 2024

The Scenting Language of Dogs presents a deep dive into understanding how dogs work the scent picture and solve odor problems with the focus on identifying and understanding the meaning of changes in the dog’s behavior.

Amy will discuss common body movement, giving the handler a vocabulary to help interpret what the dog is doing as he interacts with the environment. Terms like sponging, convergence, windshield wiper, sorting, head snap, and the skirt will become the vocabulary to organize and decode the language of understanding how dogs “communicate” through their natural movements. This guide to understanding body movement provides a practical approach to improving observational skills that will then allow for faster more useful ways to respond to and support the dog.

Join Amy as she breaks down components of common search dog body language to improve our literacy, and develop fluency, in the dog’s language of odor detection. Through lecture, video, and live demonstrations, Amy will take you on a guided tour of odor detection and reading your dog.

Leash Handling for Competition – Sunday, March 10, 2024

Leash Handling for Competition is geared towards the trial-minded handler who wants to explore the nuance of leash technique for that competitive edge. Amy will cover various skill sets for leash handling to expand the handler tool set and develop strategies for employing the best tools for the search parameters.

Understanding the appropriate application and timing of leash technique is key to successful execution. Analysis of search areas, conditions, dog search style and ability along with handler ability will provide a framework for building and maximizing search work in partnership with your dog.

Through lecture, video, and live demonstrations, Amy will cover lots of ground to improve your competitive game.

Amy is one of the country’s most experienced K9 Nose Work® instructors and is a co-founder of NACSW™. In addition to teaching many of the top competitive teams, she has also reviewed hundreds of trial videos that have provided important insights into training and handling for success.  In addition to being the director of the NACSW Trial Division, Amy is owner of the Los Angeles based All Good Dogs, LLC. www.allgooddogs.biz, which provides training and behavior consulting, scent detection, and K9 Nose Work products.

Amy Herot

Amy is a professional K9 trainer and handler and brings over two decades of experience to her work. She has had certified teams in Narcotics and Explosives detection and has logged over 1500 instructional hours in detection dog training.

As co-founder of K9 Nose Work^® and the National Association of Canine Scent Work^®, LLC (NACSW™), she has sought to bring that experience to companion dogs and handlers through the development of K9 Nose Work® classes and sport events. Amy currently directs the NACSW™ Trial Division.

In the canine sport world Amy has trained dogs for tracking, agility, sheepherding, protection sports and detection. She competed nationally with her Dutch Shepherd, Maya, and took 3^rd place in Narcotics Detection at the Gold Coast K9 Work Dog Trials and 1^st place, open division, at the Oxnard Police K9 Foundation Inaugural Trial, 2009. Her Belgian Malinois, Seven, was a nationally certified explosives detection dog and took 1^st place in the Explosives Building search at the 2009 Ventura County Sheriff’s K9 Trial and holds an APR 1 IPO title.

Amy holds a Bachelor of Science from NYU and was nationally certified through the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers (CCPDT) from 2004 to 2019. Additionally, she is a graduate of the Balu Academy for Dog Trainers and was a John Rogerson associate here in the U.S.

Her professional memberships and affiliations include the Association of Pet Dog Trainers (APDT), Southern California Schutzhund Club, President (SCSC), California Narcotics Canine Association (CNCA) and International Association of Bomb Technicians and Investigators (IABTI). Amy has given much volunteer time and expertise to the betterment of shelter dogs. Some of Amy’s other achievements have been the 2007 President’s Volunteer Service Award, spcaLA’s 2005 Outstanding H.E.A.L. (Helping Enhance Animals Lives) Volunteer and 2006 Volunteer of the Year.
